National Outdoor Leadership School - Nols - Index

Fredrik Norrsell
There is little doubt in my mind that the
memories and lessons of wilderness trips
last a lifetime. About a year ago, I was able to
climb the Grand Teton in Wyoming with my
oldest daughter, Mara. Now, when we drive by
the Grand, she looks at the mountain differ-
ently; she looks at it intimately. As a parent, that is one of the great-
est gifts I could give her, the gift of love for the outdoors.
Tendencies throughout the world, however, seem to be mov-
ing alarmingly in the other direction. Increased use of passive en-
tertainment-TV, video games and computers-has offset the time
previously dedicated to free playtime in the outdoors. These trends
have certainly gotten our attention at NOLS as they have significant
implications for the health and well-being of our society. We know
at NOLS that lessons learned in the outdoors lead to lifelong recre-
ation skills, an appreciation for natural history, a strong environ-
mental ethic, and well-developed leadership techniques. Students
also leave their NOLS courses in the best shape they've ever been in.
What more could you ask for in regards to your child being healthy
and successful in this world?
As you peruse this catalog for either yourself or a young adult
in your life, remember the rewards of a strong connection to the
wilderness. Come experience with NOLS what it is like to cook
creatively and feed yourself well in the backcountry, communicate
effectively with coursemates in order to achieve a common goal,
and push your own capabilities beyond what you ever thought pos-
sible. And imagine what that experience could do in the life of a
young person you love.
